Tres Trapi Aruba: The Turtle Steps, Done Right

Tres Trapi Aruba — three steps carved into the limestone at Malmok — is the island’s most reliable place to swim beside green sea turtles from shore. It is free, it is beautiful, and it is being loved half to death. Here is how to visit well.

What Tres Trapi actually is

The name means “three steps” in Papiamento. The steps drop you straight into clear water over a seagrass patch where turtles graze most mornings. There is no sand and no shade — this is a swim stop, not a beach day.

Rules that matter

  • Look, never touch: keeping distance from turtles is both the law and basic decency.
  • Reef-safe sunscreen only — the oxybenzone ban applies here especially.
  • Water shoes help; the steps and rocks are slick at the edges.
  • Go before 9 a.m. — by mid-morning the boat groups arrive and the magic thins.

Making a morning of it

Tres Trapi sits between Boca Catalina and Malmok, so the classic plan is all three in one snorkel crawl with a rental car. Prefer a guide and gear included? Several morning snorkel tours stop here. Full rankings live in our snorkeling guide.

Locals and visitors also call it simply the three steps or 3 steps Aruba — that is the literal translation of Tres Trapi, and the three limestone steps are exactly how you enter the water.

Early morning

Tres Trapi (“three steps” in Papiamento) is a pocket-sized cove on the Malmok coast named for the steps cut into the rock. It is known for the sea stars on the sandy bottom and for turtles that graze just offshore. It is not a beach for lying on; it is a place to slip into the water, look, and leave it as you found it.

Snorkelling and water conditions

The water is calm and clear and deepens quickly. Look but do not touch the sea stars: lifting them out of the water harms them. Turtles are most often seen early in the morning.

Facilities, shade and parking

None. Park along the road and keep the visit short; there is nowhere to sit in the shade. Combine it with Boca Catalina and Arashi for a full snorkel morning.
