Packing for Aruba is easy once you know the island’s three quirks: the sun is stronger than it feels, the restaurant air-conditioning is arctic, and the trade winds eat sun hats. Here’s the complete list โ what to bring, what to skip, and what to buy there.
The Non-Negotiables
โ๏ธ Reef-safe sunscreen, more than you think โ it’s pricey on-island and the trade winds disguise burns until it’s too late. โ๏ธ Two swimsuits so one is always dry. โ๏ธ Rash guard for snorkel days and kids. โ๏ธ Water shoes if Mangel Halto or rocky snorkel entries are on the plan. โ๏ธ Polarized sunglasses with a strap โ the wind is real. โ๏ธ A light layer per person: Aruban restaurants chill their dining rooms like walk-in fridges.
Clothing Reality Check
Aruba is casual. Shorts and sandals cover 90% of the trip; one collared shirt or sundress handles fine dining (only 2 Fools and a handful of others lean dressier). For the Arikok UTV day: closed shoes, clothes you’re willing to coat in dust, and a bandana โ trust us on the bandana.
The Smart Extras
โ๏ธ Dry bag for boat and UTV days. โ๏ธ Reusable water bottle โ Aruba’s tap water is superb, refill everywhere. โ๏ธ Motion-sickness tablets if catamarans worry you. โ๏ธ A small cooler bag turns any grocery run into a beach picnic. โ๏ธ Underwater phone pouch or cheap action cam for the Antilla. โ๏ธ US plug adapters: none needed for Americans โ Aruba runs 120V US-style outlets.
Leave at Home
Umbrella (it rains 15 minutes a year, dramatically), hair dryer (every hotel has one), formal wear beyond one outfit, snorkel fins if space is tight (rentals are everywhere), and anything you’d be sad to lose to a windy beach.
Buy It There Instead
Groceries and beach-day supplies at Super Food or Ling & Sons, cheap floats and sand toys in Oranjestad, and aloe products โ Aruba grows the world’s best aloe, and the local Aruba Aloe shops sell after-sun that beats anything you’d pack. It’s the best souvenir on the island anyway.
