Short version: if you are staying more than three nights and want to see Baby Beach, Arikok, the north coast or the local restaurants, rent a car. If you are staying on Palm Beach for a long weekend and mostly want the beach in front of your hotel, skip it and use taxis, the bus and tour pick-ups. Everything below helps you decide, and then book without surprises.

Do you need a car in Aruba?

Aruba is small: about 30 km long and 9 km wide. From the Palm Beach hotel strip you can reach the California Lighthouse in 10 minutes, Oranjestad in 15, Mangel Halto in 25 and Baby Beach in about 40. Nothing is far, but almost nothing outside the hotel strip is walkable, and there is no ride-hailing app. That combination is why a car pays for itself quickly for most visitors.

Your tripVerdictWhy
Palm Beach, 3-4 nights, beach and restaurantsSkip itRestaurants, bars and the pier are on foot; tours pick up at hotels; two taxi rides cover the rest.
Eagle Beach, any lengthRent for part of the stayEagle Beach is quieter with fewer restaurants in walking range; a car for 2-3 days covers dinners and one island loop.
Any hotel, 5+ nightsRent itOnce you add two beach days away from the hotel and a few dinners, taxis cost more than a compact car.
Families with kidsRent itCar seats, beach gear and nap timing are far easier with your own car. Baby Beach and Mangel Halto are the best kids' beaches and both need a drive.
Cruise day (8-10 hours in port)Usually a tour insteadA rental on cruise day works, but a jeep or UTV tour with a set return time removes the risk of missing the ship.
Want the Natural Pool or north coastTour or 4×4 onlyRental contracts often exclude off-road driving. A guided 4×4 jeep tour is the sensible way to reach the Natural Pool (UTVs and ATVs are banned inside Arikok).

What a rental car costs in Aruba

Prices move with the season and the fleet is small, so book ahead for December-April and holiday weeks. As a rough guide, a compact automatic in low season costs about the same per day as a single taxi ride from Palm Beach to Baby Beach and back. High-season rates can be double. Check the live price for your dates before assuming either.

  • Economy / compact automatic: the right choice for 90% of visitors. Every paved road on the island is fine in a small car.
  • Mid-size SUV: useful for families with luggage or five people; not needed for the roads.
  • 4×4 / jeep: only if you plan to drive the unpaved north coast or Arikok interior, and only if your contract allows it. Many do not.
  • Extras that add up: a second driver, child seats, and airport surcharges. Compare the total, not the headline rate.

Check the insurance before you land

Aruba is one of the places where some credit-card rental coverage is excluded or limited. Read your card’s policy for Aruba specifically, or take the rental company’s collision damage waiver. A cheap daily rate with a large uninsured deposit is not a bargain.

Airport pickup vs hotel delivery

Queen Beatrix International Airport (AUA) is 10-15 minutes from Eagle Beach and 20 from Palm Beach. Picking up at the airport means you skip the taxi to the hotel; local companies also deliver cars to hotels, which suits people who only want a car for two or three days in the middle of their stay. If you fly in late, a hotel delivery the next morning is often less stressful than an airport counter at midnight.

Driving in Aruba: the rules that matter

  • Side of the road: right, like the US and Europe. Distances and speed signs are in kilometres.
  • Speed limits: generally 50 km/h in towns and 80 km/h on the main roads. Police do run speed checks on the road between the airport and the hotels.
  • Roundabouts: everywhere. Traffic already in the roundabout has priority; signal when you exit.
  • Licence: a valid licence from your home country is accepted. Minimum age is typically 21, with young-driver surcharges under 25 at many companies.
  • Seat belts and phones: belts are mandatory; handheld phone use while driving is not allowed.
  • Fuel: sold by the litre at a government-regulated price, so there is no need to shop around. Most rentals are full-to-full.
  • Night driving: main roads are lit; side roads and the north coast are not. Watch for goats and donkeys on rural roads.

Road conditions

The west and south coasts, Oranjestad and the road to San Nicolas are all paved and in good shape. Signage is thinner than you might expect, so use a phone map. The north-east coast (Arikok, the Natural Pool, the Bushiribana ruins area) is dirt track with deep ruts and sand: a normal rental will get stuck, and the contract will not cover the damage. Treat “4×4 required” signs as real.

Parking

Beaches, supermarkets and restaurants outside the capital have free parking. Downtown Oranjestad has paid street zones during business hours, marked with signs and payable by app or at machines, plus free options a few blocks from the waterfront. Never leave valuables in a parked car at a beach, and lock the trunk.

  1. South loop: Palm Beach β†’ Mangel Halto for a swim (25 min) β†’ lunch in Savaneta at a fishermen’s pier β†’ Baby Beach (15 min further) β†’ San Nicolas murals on the way back.
  2. North loop: Malmok and Boca Catalina for morning snorkelling β†’ Arashi Beach β†’ California Lighthouse β†’ Alto Vista Chapel β†’ back for sunset at Eagle Beach.
  3. Dinner nights: the best local restaurants are spread across Noord, Savaneta and Santa Cruz. With a car you are not limited to the strip.

Quick answers

Can I drive in Aruba with a US, Canadian or European licence?
Yes. A valid driver’s licence from your home country is accepted for rentals and for driving. An international driving permit is not required.
What side of the road does Aruba drive on?
The right-hand side, with left-hand-drive cars, the same as the United States, Canada and mainland Europe.
Is it safe to drive in Aruba?
Yes. Roads are paved and generally calm outside Oranjestad rush hour. The main hazards are roundabouts if you are not used to them, unlit rural roads at night, and unpaved north-coast tracks in a normal car.
Do I need a 4×4 in Aruba?
Not for beaches, restaurants, Oranjestad or the lighthouse. Only the Natural Pool and the interior of Arikok need a 4×4, and most rental contracts exclude off-road driving, so a guided jeep tour is the practical way to see them.
Should I rent a car for the whole trip or just a few days?
For a week on Eagle or Palm Beach, three days in the middle of the stay covers a south loop, a north loop and a couple of dinners. Airport-to-airport rentals make more sense for longer stays or apartment-style hotels with kitchens where you will shop for groceries.
How far is Baby Beach from Palm Beach?
About 30 km, or 40-45 minutes by car via Oranjestad and the coastal road past Savaneta.
