Cruising into Oranjestad? Aruba is one of the best port days in the Caribbean โ the terminal sits right in the capital, the best beaches are minutes away, and the island runs on time. Here’s how to squeeze the most out of your 8โ10 hours ashore.
Step Off and Get Oriented
The cruise terminal is a 5-minute walk from downtown Oranjestad โ shops, cafes and the pastel Dutch architecture are immediately around you. Taxis line up at the terminal with fixed government rates; the Arubus station is a short walk and runs straight up the beach strip for a few dollars.
Your Three Best Port-Day Plans
Plan A โ The Beach Day
Taxi or bus 10โ15 minutes to Eagle Beach or Palm Beach, rent two chairs and an umbrella, swim in flat turquoise water, lunch at a beach bar, and be back with time to spare. Zero-stress, maximum Caribbean.
Plan B โ The Adventure
Book a morning UTV tour or a catamaran snorkel over the Antilla wreck โ many operators time departures around cruise schedules and pick up near the terminal. Book before your cruise, not on the dock: the good ones sell out and dockside prices are worse.
Plan C โ The Wander
Stay on foot: Oranjestad’s shops and museums, the free downtown streetcar, lunch at a local spot, and a quick taxi to the fofoti trees for the photo. Cheapest port day you’ll ever have.
Cruise-Day Golden Rules
Ship time may differ from island time โ confirm before you wander. Build a one-hour buffer for the walk back. US dollars work everywhere, no exchange needed. And the tap water is safe, so refill the bottle before reboarding.
