Aruba Sunset Cruises: Open-Bar Sails, Dinner Cruises & Which to Book

Aruba faces west, the trade wind blows from the east, and the sun drops into a flat sea almost every evening of the year. That is why the sunset cruise is the island’s second most-booked boat trip after the morning snorkel sail. Two hours on the water, an open bar on most boats, and a sky that does the rest. The choice is about which boat, not whether.

The three kinds of sunset cruise

TypeBoatVibePick it if
Open-bar sunset sailLarge catamaran, 40-80 guestsMusic, rum punch, sociableYou want the classic party-lite sail and the best price
Dinner cruiseCatamaran or motor yacht with a served mealCalmer, seated, romanticYou want dinner and the sunset in one booking
Private charterSmall catamaran, sailboat or power boatYour group only, your musicAnniversaries, proposals, groups of 6-12 splitting the cost

The large open-bar sails are the best value and the most fun for groups; the trade-off is a crowd. Dinner cruises are worth it for a special evening but you pay restaurant prices for boat food. Private charters are the best experience per person once you have six or more people; see the private boat charter guide for the maths.

Aruba sunset cruise companies compared

Almost every sunset sail leaves from the Palm Beach piers between 5:00 and 5:30 p.m. and runs about two hours. What really separates them is the boat, the crowd and what is in the glass. What time do sunset cruises leave?

Most boats check you in 30 minutes before a 5:30 p.m. departure and are back at the pier around 7:30, in time for dinner on the strip. Aruba sits close to the equator, so sunset only moves about 40 minutes across the year, roughly 6:15 p.m. in late autumn and winter and around 7:00 p.m. in early summer. Some smaller boats shift earlier in the cooler months to match: Octopus, for example, sails at 5:00 p.m. from March to September and 4:30 p.m. from October to February.

Longer afternoon-into-sunset trips such as the 4.5-hour BBQ sail leave mid-afternoon, so you get snorkeling in daylight and the sunset on the ride home.

Private sunset charters

For a proposal, anniversary or group, a private boat is worth pricing. Expect roughly $1,600 and up for a three-hour private catamaran sunset sail for up to six people, with a captain, mate, appetizers and open bar, plus a per-person charge for bigger groups. Winter is usually the most expensive season.

We arrange private sunset charters, and can add a photographer, flowers or a bartender. Request a private sunset charter and we will come back with options and an exact quote.

What to bring on a sunset cruise

  • A light layer: the breeze picks up once the sun goes down.
  • Cash for tipping the crew (10–15% is standard).
  • A phone strap or dry bag, as nets and spray are part of the fun.
  • Flat, non-marking shoes or bare feet; most crews ask for shoes off.
  • Motion-sickness tablets if you are prone to it; the north side gets bumpier.

What actually happens on board

Boarding is from a Palm Beach pier or the marina in Oranjestad about 30 minutes before departure. The boat motors or sails north along the coast toward Malmok and the California Lighthouse, then turns for the sunset with the island behind you. Most sails cut the engine for the last half hour. Drinks are usually unlimited local rum punch, beer, wine and soft drinks; snacks range from chips and dip to a proper buffet on the dinner boats. You are back at the pier 20-30 minutes after sunset, in time for a late dinner on the strip.

Local tip

Sunset in Aruba is between about 6:15 pm in December and 7:00 pm in June. Book a cruise whose departure is 90 minutes before sunset for your dates, not a fixed “5 pm” that was set for another season.

Sunset cruise vs. sunset from the beach

Honest answer: the sunset from Eagle Beach is free and just as good, and the best sunset spots guide lists where to sit. What the cruise adds is the water, the breeze, the drinks and the social side. If your budget only stretches to one boat trip, take the morning snorkel cruise instead and watch sunset from the sand. If you can do two, the sunset sail is the one to add.

Who it suits, and who should skip it

  • Couples: yes, especially the smaller boats and dinner cruises.
  • Groups and bachelor(ette) parties: the big open-bar catamarans are made for you.
  • Families: fine for teenagers; younger children get bored after the first hour and the open bar sets the tone.
  • Seasickness: the west coast is calm in the evening, but if you are very prone to it, a large catamaran is far steadier than a monohull.

Pair it with

Dinner afterwards on Palm Beach or at one of the restaurants in Noord; a morning at Arashi Beach the next day; or a full honeymoon itinerary if this is the trip for it.

Quick answers

What time do sunset cruises leave in Aruba?
Usually between 4:30 pm and 5:30 pm depending on the season, so that the boat is on the water for sunset (roughly 6:15 pm in winter and 7:00 pm in summer) and back shortly after dark.
Is the open bar really unlimited?
On most large catamarans, yes: rum punch, beer, wine and soft drinks for the duration of the sail. Premium spirits are usually extra or not offered.
Do sunset cruises include dinner?
Only the ones sold as dinner cruises. The standard sunset sail includes snacks; plan dinner on shore afterwards.
Do I need hotel pickup?
If you stay on Palm Beach, no: the piers are a short walk. From Eagle Beach or Oranjestad, choose a cruise with pickup or take a taxi to the pier.
